Repairable, like things should be. I find the screen decent and bright. If I hold it side by side with my old Samsung S20 Ultra both playing the same 4k YouTube video in sync, then: I can see the Fairphone is perhaps only 80% as bright as the Samsung. 1 case see the Samsung has slightly better colour. However, the Fairphone is snappy and powerful (I have the 6GB version), seems to have good battery life (possibly better than the Samsung) and just as good wifi and 4G reception. I also love the fingerprint reader being in the power button - this is the BEST PLACE I have ever used one. I know the Samsung has a better main camera at 108MP - and I've not had time to fully evaluate the Fairphone camera. Given the modular nature, I hope that Fairphone will come out with camera and screen upgrades as a retrofit option (even better if they'll accept the originals back for resale as 2nd hand parts). If they keep going like this, I can see me sticking with them for a long time.

thought long and hard about whether to buy a phone costing over £500, whether to buy a Samsung XcoverPro or to buy another cheap secondhand run-of-the-mill phone that I would not worry about flinging about. I am not stuck on the phone all day and some days never pick it up. I made a list of questions based on my experience of my old phone (an HTC 10 which I had disassembled and fixed with difficulty and not entirely and a previous simple Samsung slide phone with a removable battery). The Samsung had an easy to remove back and very cheap batteries which meant I could keep a few spare at all times -very necessary on a rescue boat. The HTC was a modern smart phone but glued together and incredibly fragile assembly with a battery that was deep inside the guts requiring hours of work to get out and almost invariably meant damage to the digitiser screen. The Samsung had conventional keys that could be operated by clumsy hands but the HTC, like most smart phones was a tricky experience and often meant having to delete and rekey. The memory card on the HTC and the Samsung, on the outside, could easily be hot popped out and moved to a card reader. - useful feature. The Samsung'sC3050 battery removal has its drawbacks- once you remove the battery, the date time and customisation is lost and on reinstallation it means a short while to reset customisation before you can make a call. The Fairphone 4 obviously being smart uses a touch keyboard so I was worried that with gloves on it would not work. For the logon it is a big keypad and works reasonably easily. However the phone dialer keypad is small and can be a hit and miss with gloves and cold weather. The keypad in other applications depends on a degree of customisation. The touch screen is far more precise and useable than the HTC one. Dialing is much easier and quicker on a non-smart Samsung simply because of the dedicated keys. A battery changeover is a key feature to the Fairphone for me although I have not yet got a spare battery. Apart from the delay startup time, there is no requirement to reset customisation when the battery is changed. The phone does behave as thought it had been closed down-so there are a few seconds wait before you can re-logon and use the phone again. When price and availability improve and when I have found a smart POGO charger, I will get a spare battery. I wonder if the price of the batteries will come down much; since Fairphone is not a mass market producer and pattern part makers only make when there is large demand. It is not as easy to peel off the back as I would have liked. I find it a nuisance if I want to change the memory card, or battery. The battery life when the screen is not active is amazing - possibly as good as my old Samsung C3050- certainly don’t have to charge it every other day…. I very much appreciate the option to have dual sims although would have preferred to have had two physical slots. There are times when I have had to carry two or more phones to ensure a signal and interchangeability is vital. The optional case was a bit overpriced and does not have a screen protector. I now am looking for a wallet type holder and these are not as readily available as would be for a Samsung. On the firmware side, I miss not having an integrated photo sizing tool -especially when I want to send a low resolution proof photo by email. I guess the issue can be got around via a downloaded app. It would be nice if the camera app. had within an additional ultra low size option - draft. These days when the race is on for ultra high res. the manufacturers forget the transfer /storage issues. When I move back to a BT broadband account I will try the phone using the phone-over-internet facility. That is not Skype. That is another feature that some new phones do not have but Fairphone assures me works on their 4 version. Very useful when the cellular network is bad or down. Unfortunately you can't make over-internet calls via an alternative Hawai pocket router on a BT mobile which I have for my tablet. Theoretically this could give a third network. I am blown away by the data transfer speed of 4g+ through EE which makes my BT fibre broadband look incredibly slow. When 5g gets there I may drop my landline broadband. So far I have not found any 5g in my area of Reading, Berkshire, so can't compare but the Fairphone's 5G capability makes it future proofed. The wireless sharing feature is superb for other portable devices such as laptops and tablets. I am using my Fairphone with a Lebara phone card (runs off Vodafone). Once or twice I have had network busy messages when trying to make a phone call; it ask you to try again later. I have tried a few mobile providers and they all seem to have occasional issues - sometimes rapid speed then no connection. It is not yet as reliable as a hardwired landline broadband. The day before I finalised my decision I phoned Fairphone with my list of questions and was amazed by the kindness and willingness to help. Incidentally I had tried similar calls to Samsung regarding their only removable battery commercial phone, and found them totally indifferent and lacking in any knowledge or awareness of their model range. Joe at Fairphone took the time to email me further information which he could not give me over the call. I was so impressed. Gomibo and buying from outside the UK was yet another worry but am happy to say was actually a great experience and saved me money. All in all, I would thoroughly recommend the Fairphone 4.

Het is mooi om te zien dat er een modulaire smartphone is op de markt en dat je lang met de telefoon kan doen. Vaak zie je dat telefoonfabrikanten snel software support stoppen met hun telefoons, (vooral bij android toestellen) maar fairphone doet dit niet. De telefoon is wel aan de grote kant wat voor mij onhandig is omdat de telefoon dan iets lastiger in mijn broekzak past. Het voelt een beetje als een rugged telefoon. Jammer dat fairphone ervoor heeft gekozen om de koptelefoonaansluiting te verwijderen. Het zal fijn zijn geweest als ze dat niet hadden gedaan of een dongle in de doos hadden gedaan. De camera's zijn prima. Zeker niet zo goed als een pixel of de nieuwere iphones maar goed genoeg. Ook is de ultrawide fijn om te hebben. Ik merk wel dat de fairphone soms iets meer moeite heeft met fotos maken in het donker. Voor minder geld kan je toestellen kopen die sneller zijn en betere camera's hebben, maar dan heb je niet de goede software support die fairphone aanbiedt en het modulaire ontwerp waarmee je onderdelen kan vervangen als ze kapot gaan.

Camera kwaliteit - vooral met minder daglicht - is echt niet goed. Zeker als je IPhone gewend bent. Overstappen van Iphone naar Android vond ik zelf niet zo vervelend als dat ik dacht en ook wel een verademing. Even iets anders en ook de verschillen leren kennen. De telefoon valt vaak uit tijdens het bellen, dat lijkt een fout te zijn in de software. Soms heb ik er weken geen last van, dan weer wel. Ik doe het 100% voor het milieu, omdat ik dit bedrijf wil steunen en omdat ik hun principes toe juich. Maar je levert wel wat in qua gebruiksvriendelijkheid en kwaliteit tov een Iphone. Ik heb daar geen last van, maar het moet wel gezegd worden. Ik ben zelf gewoon een beetje klaar met altijd maar die grote bedrijven steunen die voor de rest ook echt niet heel veel bedenken qua milieu en duurzaamheid. Dan liever een Fairphone die echt er mee bezig is en er echt iets mee doet.

Na lang zoeken en vergelijken toch de Fairphone 4 aangeschaft. Ik probeer al jaren langer dan 2 a 2.5 jaar met een telefoon te doen. Dit is mij tot op heden met diverse merken niet gelukt. Ik ben altijd heel voorzichtig met mijn spullen en toch begeven al mijn mobieltjes het net voor of net na de 2 jaar. Hoe kan dat toch? Anyway! In eerste instantie viel de Fairphone 4 op vanwege het modulaire design van het toestel. Hoera! Eindelijk weer een telefoon die je zonder fohn open kan maken om de batterij te vervangen! Ook andere onderdelen zijn simpel te vervangen voor een klein prijsje. Het tweede was de duurzaamheid van het toestel, alles is eerlijk gemaakt en van gerecycled of eerlijk verkregen materiaal. Voelt toch wel goed ;) Maar... Volgens de specificaties en verschillende vergelijkings sites zou de Fairphone 4 minder goed presteren als mijn toen huidige telefoon. Het scheelde niet veel maar goed, wou er wel op voor uit gaan natuurlijk. Ook las ik her en der slechte reviews over de prestaties van de camera. Dit deed mij erg laten twijfelen. Na veel getob toch de gok genomen omdat ik liever een stabiele, robuuste, makkelijker te repareren, zonder voor geïnstalleerde onzin, bewuste telefoon MET 5 jaar garantie wilde hebben in plaats van een wegwerp telefoontje. Inmiddels zijn we bijna een maandje verder en het toestel presteert veel beter dan mijn vorige mobiel. Ook de camera is beter! (mijn vorige toestel was een high end Sony uit 2019). Alles is beter ten opzichtte van mijn vorige toestel, al is mijn vorige mobiel op papier beter...specificaties zeggen dus ook niet alles. Enige nadeel wat ik tot nu toe heb gevonden is dat de vingerafdruksensor op de aan/uit knop zit, dat is aan de ene kant handig en aan de andere kant soms irritant wanneer je alleen wilt kijken hoe laat het is. Ben je zelf ook aam het twijfelen, doe het gewoon! Je zal er geen spijt van krijgen!

Prima degelijk toestel

Een tijdje geleden al mijn oog laten vallen op dit toestel en meteen besteld op het moment dat deze leverbaar was. Ik heb voor dit toestel gekozen omdat deze eenvoudig te repareren is. Ook is het toegestaan om andere software te installeren. De specificaties zijn als een goed midrange toestel, de prijs is aan de hoge kant maar gezien de pluspunten zeker een aanrader. Het geïnstalleerde Android besturingssysteem is vrij van door andere fabrikanten opgedrongen software.
